B – Under cover of darkness
She waited long after the candle had snuffed itself out, listening to the sound of stillness. The world appeared to be on pause, resting and unaware. It was as they needed it to be.
It still took him some time to come to her. Her eyes had long grown accustomed to the darkness, so Loki was crisp and clear when he emerged from the gloom. He stood out from the shadows, even cloaked in black, his eyes the only spot of colour. They were jewel bright.
Neither spoke, each letting the sight of the other soak in for long moments. She concentrated on her breathing, keeping it even, keeping it from becoming shallow, panicky gasps. She broke first.
“I missed you.” A whisper, barely more than a breath, lest she wake the world.
“I know.” It would be so unlike him to admit to weakness or emotion, but his words carried the reciprocal sentiment anyway. “I cannot stay long.”
She bit her lip to quell the sob which threatened to erupt. “It’s not fair.”
He laughed, a short, silent heave of his chest. “It is entirely fair that they punish me. But not you.” His brows knitted together in something akin to regret. “I will have my freedom soon enough. Until then, this will need to be enough.”
“How can it be?” She reached out to him, despite all the rules, and her fingers passed through him like smoke.
