THIS POST is designed to act as a basic, free, and online resource for Old Norse vocabulary. Entries have been condensed to the Old Norse word, part of speech, and a basic definition. This âdictionaryâ is meant more for reference, or, perhaps more appropriately, for the casual learner, or even an already somewhat familiar learner. In other words, this list is meant to complement more reliable sources of learning, if not just for casual entertainment and practice. If you would like more comprehensive resources for learning Old Norse, see the citations at the bottom of this post.(1)
As for pronouncing these words, there are generally two methods: old and modern. The old method is reconstructed, whereas the modern method is the same pronunciation as modern Icelandic. The information regarding these methods can be found in Jesse L. Byockâs book, listed below, but I have also made posts about these methods on this blog, so here are the links to those respective guides on pronunciation:
As for the dictionary aspect of this post, each word is included in an alphabetically ordered list, including basic (and I do mean basic) grammatical information and English definitions. If any questions concerning this list arise, send them my way via an ask and I will elaborate or explain the issue. More words will be added roughly every twelve or thirteen weeks, or every three months. Nonetheless, individuals words are posted once a week (on Wednesday) and can be viewed here.
This post is part of a collective project called the VĂkingabĂłk Database. The goal of this project is to compile various resources, whether as links or lists (particularly of books, articles, or sites), that relate to the field of medieval Scandinavian studies. This project began on the 6th of December, 2016. This post may be updated in the future so that the information it contains remains current and applicable.
This post was last updated on: 05 JUL, 2017 (12 new words, ö â ǫ, and aesthetic improvements)
I hope this information has been helpful. If you have any questions concerning this list, or pertaining to the project in general, feel free to contact me atfjorntheskald@gmail.com. If you have any additional information you would like to add to this post, such as updated text availabilities or corrections, please let it be known.
Með vinsemd og virðingu, (With friendliness and respect,) Fjörn
I did not like to be touched, but it was a strange dislike. I did not like to be touched because I craved it too much. I wanted to be held very tight so I would not break.
Lokiâs question hung there in the air around them. Â And it took Darcy a few seconds to realize that the âMs. Lewisâ he was referring to was her. Â Loki, Thorâs baby brother (not so much âbabyâ as ânot-quite-so-ancient-by-earth-standardsâ as Thor) wanted to know if she had plans after work. Â
What were words again? Â
âNo,â she said bluntly, finally answering him and cutting through the tension with her machete of awkward. Â It was lucky that heâd approached her when she was alone at her desk. Â This significantly cut down on the level of awkward. Â
If her labmates werenât two of the nosiest scientists in the entire world. Â
Jane let out a whisper of a sigh and Bruce resumed typing. Â
Or maybe she was just imagining that everything had stopped the second Loki spoke to her. Â
Maybe if he did it more often â talked to her, that is â it wouldnât be such an earth-stopping event. Â But he didnât. Â
She could count on her hand the number of words heâd spoken to her that day, actuallyâŠother than the query about her plans.  Pretty much a âhelloâ when sheâd arrived and a muttered âexcuse meâ when she had to move around him to get at the thing Jane was rapidly and vaguely fluttering her hands at.
Loki was supposedly the silver-tongued prince of AsgardâŠwhy wasnât he using that tongue on her? Â
Oh god⊠she berated herself, in complete disbelief that sheâd even so much as thought about that. Â
Well, not SO much disbelief. Â In addition to being silver-tongued, he was purportedly handsome. Â And Darcy could concur. Â So much concurring was happening. Â Oh holy hell, did the concurring happen. Â
But in all honesty?  Darcy was a touch relieved that the younger Odinson â was it Odinson?  Thor still called him âbrotherâ, but there was a little bit of cringing happening on Lokiâs part whenever he did â anywayâŠShe was relieved that Loki didnât speak to her as often as his nickname would imply.  Mostly because he scared her. Â
Not in the âformer-evil-genius-who-tried-to-enslave-mankindâ wayâŠThor had pretty much explained what all that mess was about.  Not to minimize the horrible things heâd done in the slightest, but Darcy was around a bunch of people who seemed to have these horrific pasts and one of the best things about her was her ability to look past actions and into the person. Â
But sheâd done that a little with Loki and he scared her for a different reason. The unbridled-wildness kind of wayâŠ
Not that Darcy hadnât tamed a wild stallion or two in her dayâŠbut Loki seemed to be a different breed.  He was one of those things Thor talked about all the time.  A bilgesnipe. Â
Or maybe something a little less ugly. Â Did they have wild stags on Asgard? Â
âWould you like to?â Â Loki asked. Â Another question. Â
Damn, he was all for quadrupling his total spoken word count in her direction today, wasnât he? Â
âTo have plans?â she asked, totally delaying the inevitable, where he asked what she was pretty sure he was going to ask and she melted into a puddle of awkward on the floor. Â
âPlansâŠdinnerâŠvigorous love-makingâŠthe choice is yours, Ms. Lewis.â Â
She could swear Bruce started choking. Â And maybe it was a coincidence â dude didnât seem to know the meaning of small sips when it came to piping hot tea â but it didnât seem like it. Â
She drew up her courage from somewhere deep within her. Â Somewhere deep. Â Like it was deep as fuck, you guys. Â Deep, deep down courage. Â
She tilted her head, saucily placing her hand on her hip. Â âI think if vigorous lovemaking is on the table, you should definitely call me Darcy.â Â She winked and added at the end for an extra punch of umph. Â âLokes.â Â
He smiled.  WhichâŠup until this point, she hadnât really seen in its final form. Â
Did she say she was scared? Â Scared wasnât the word anymore. Â
Hopelessly giddy. Â Thatâs what she was. Â
Because Lokiâs smile? Â In what she hoped was its final form? Â Was nothing but downright sexy. Â Dude had bedroom eyes for days. Â And cheekbones that went all the way, man. Â Whatever that meant? Â It was true. Â
She felt her cheeks flush hot and pink as she stood there. Â
âDarcy it isâŠâ he paused for a moment before continuing.  âIâd like to see you tonightâŠâ Â
She was biting down on her lower lip to stop herself from grinning. Â âSee me where?â
His eyes widened infinitesimally.  âI would be forever grateful if youâd allow me to cook you dinner?  If youâd allow me to show you the starsâŠthe galaxiesâŠworlds so much different than the one where you liveâŠworlds that would hold you in the highest regards. Darcy.â Â
She arched an eyebrow.  âMaybe letâs start with dinner.  At my place.  Iâll help you cook.  And⊠in response to the latter part of your statementâŠdeclarationâŠstatlaration? I dunno if youâve noticed?  Iâm held in some pretty high regards around here.â  She cocked her head to the side with a smirk. Â
âNot high enough,â he countered. Â
Ah. Â There it was. Â The silver tongue. Â He wanted something. Â
And judging by the look in those eyes of his, that something was Darcy Catherine Lewis. Â
âFlattery will get you nowhere. Â A nicely cooked steak, though? Â Thatâll win wars.â Â
Loki let out the breath he was holding and conceded.  âSteak it isâŠâ  He squinted skeptically.  âWhat sort of person doesnât like flattery?â he asked. Â
âThe sort who has heard enough of it to realize that itâs only rarely sincere. Â The sort of person who already knows all the bullshit youâre trying to tell me. Â I know what I am. Â Iâm a hot, young, voluptuous woman. Â I certainly didnât need you to fall from the sky and fill me in.â Â
He smiled again. Â Same smile as before. Â âI suppose that will save me a lot of time, then.â Â
Darcy couldnât help but return the expression. Â He hadnât gotten all butthurt and horrible. Â âI suppose it will.â Â
âDinner at eight?â Â
âNot if you expect me to not eat anything beforehand.â Â
